Once one of Christendom's most popular pilgrimage destinations, Gemiler Island is sometimes called St. It is also called Nicholas Island. Since this area came under the threat of pirates around 650 AD, the small Byzantine settlements on Gemiler Island moved to the mainland and the island was abandoned. On this island, it is possible to see scattered remains of four churches, evidence of Byzantine houses, a harbor, waterways, tombs, and cemeteries.
